About
Ryan
Ryan Paul is an actor, improviser, writer, and educator living in Austin, TX.
He has an extensive background in Shakespeare and other early dramatists, earning his PhD in English in 2010 from the University of Arizona, and teaching Shakespeare at the university level for 15 years. He has studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse (NYC), In the Moment Acting (Austin), and Carol Hickey Acting Studio (Austin), and has also extensively studied and performed improv in Austin (UCB/Coldtowne). He has acted in commercials, short films, and has appeared on the TV Series Love & Death (HBO) and Murder Made Me Famous (REELZ).
“As an acting coach, my goal is to teach other actors to take ownership of Shakespeare – to make it their own, so that they can then turn themselves over to the language. I work with students at all levels of experience; no prior experience with Shakespeare is necessary.
My teaching draws on a variety of acting techniques, including ideas and exercises developed by Stanislavsky, Meisner, Jacques Lecoq, and others, as well as Shakespeare-specific methods devised by Barry Edelstein, Peter Hall, Adrian Noble, and many others. I begin with the fundamentals: understanding the text, mastering the verse, activating the imagery, finding the actions.”
